i absolutely love this quote from roald dahl, one of my all time favorite authors. i’ve been meaning to go back and re-read all of his books for quite some time now, but can’t ever find the time! i’m sure i would get so much more out of them now than i did when i read them when i was 12.

my favorite roald dahl book is the bfg, what’s yours? do you have any favorite books from your childhood that you’ve re-read as an adult? how did their meaning change?

i had a long weekend of work with just a little dash of play mixed in. sundays and mondays are actually the longest days of my week so by the time “jumpstart monday” rolls around i’m usually ready to just crawl into bed.  however, as i was perusing one of my favorite spots for inspiration, i happened upon this image and it just made me smile. even on this dreary, cold, grey day let’s keep in mind the magic of each day filled with wonder, bravery and hope. here’s to a sunny, happy week to you all.

it’s a special day today. happy martin luther king jr day everyone, and congratulations to president barack obama on his inauguration. as i was reading so many wonderful, inspiring quotes from such an inspiring leader, i decided to pick this one for its simple yet powerful message.

let’s harbor love instead of hate in our lives, today and all days.

in all honesty though, what is better than fall? i love the crisp mornings, the palpable feeling of change in the air, and don’t even get me started on layering. i know spring is the season of new beginnings, but i always feel so inspired in the fall. because i love lists and love fall, here are some of the reasons fall is my favorite.

# pumpkin spice lattes. duh. starbucks, the world thanks you for this treat.

# boots. boots & tights. boots & leggings. boots & skinny jeans. boots with the fur. you get the idea.

# turning off the A/C. letting that cool breeze in.

# new tv. welcome back glee, modern family, the voice, and all the new, promising shows.

# dozing off to the sounds of football. reminds me of fall in vermont when i was a kid.

# baking. crank up that oven, it’s chilly out there! pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cupcakes, apple pie.

# bulky sweaters. (to mask all the baking i’ve been doing/consuming).

# deep moody nail polish. anything burgundy, plum, grey, brown. begone neon!

# back to school mentality: starting fresh, full of opportunity, ready to take on the world.

# fall foliage and back country roads.

# pumpkin carving, fall decor, and crunchy leaves.

just try and tell me you don’t agree.

september has been lovely in dc, but frankly, i’m most excited for october and november, arguably my two favorite months of the year. this october i’m going to nantucket to visit my sister for almost FOUR whole days. i can’t wait to spend time with her and her family and i will absolutely relish being in my favorite place during my favorite season. two weeks after i get home, my lovely mom is coming to visit from florida! i am already brimming with ideas for us to do while she’s here and can’t wait to have her stay with us in our apartment. dc friends, any fun mom-daughter date ideas?  november is jesse’s birthday and a possible trip to nyc, and my favorite holiday of all time- thanksgiving, and hopefully a trip to chicago. hopefully these two months won’t fly by because i want to enjoy every single second.

do you have any exciting fall plans? have the most amazing week.

i do not work out. i consider my job to be somewhat of a workout (even the doctor said there was some validity to that!) and so i use that as an excuse as to why i don’t work out, but really, i just hate it. i have never really been a gym girl (boooooring, even with the tv’s attached to the elliptical) and i can’t stand running. the only thing i have ever really liked are fitness classes (kickboxing, zumba, etc) and yoga. alas, i can’t afford a gym membership– well i can afford it, but i have a pattern of signing up for a gym package, using it for 2 weeks and then letting it fall to the wayside.

this past weekend as i was planning brunch with a friend, she mentioned she was going to yoga the morning of our brunch. um, can i join? so i signed up for a “new member” unlimited class week long pass and hoped for the best. saturday we did a 1.5 hour yoga class and it was a-maz-ing. i haven’t worked that hard (i.e. sweated that much) in a long time. reward: guilt free eggs benedict.

yesterday i was a little bit sore but mostly happy from my yoga day and signed up for a 5pm de-tox yoga. i didn’t totally realize that de-tox probably meant sweating to death until i was there and the teacher started cranking up the heaters. you do know it’s august in dc, right lady? anyway, after over an hour of sweating and down dogs (and a lot of child’s pose for me, if i’m being honest) i completed my second yoga escapade.

today my arms and shoulders are so so sore, but i’m happy i went. i have a very busy work week but am hoping to try a few more classes before my week expires and then i will decide if i want to continue on with a pass. i’m thinking i will.

what workouts do you guys like best? pilates? yoga? running? swimming?

if you’re in the dc area, i strongly recommend trying out epic yoga in dupont circle. and thanks for hanging in there with me these last few weeks of posting sparingly, i’ve been working on a few projects for the blog, so stay tuned.

have a wonderful, challenging, rewarding week.

i saw this quote on a notebook while i was doing some serious antiquing in virginia this past weekend. i didn’t buy the notebook (surprising!) but i did snap a picture of the quote because i loved how it seemed to perfectly capture the day that i was having. not only did the quote ring through because i was having a fabulous day of searching through antique stores and collections of vintage and repurposed furniture, but it also serves as a nice reminder to notice the small things, the mundane things that maybe go unnoticed, but collectively make our lives a little bit lovelier. some of the small things that i appreciate are long phone calls with my uncle, random texts from old friends, discovering a delicious new cocktail, eating ice cream out of the carton, and the first sip of coffee in the morning.

what small things collectively make your life great? have a delightful week.

i happily had a very low key weekend. i did have to work a little bit, but the rest of the weekend was spent with some good quality alone time. jesse had a coaching session all weekend so i spent my mornings drinking coffee, watching movies, and reading blogs. sometimes it’s so nice to have some time to yourself to indulge in your guilty pleasures.

i can’t believe that it’s august already! where has the summer gone? i can’t say that i’m too sad about fall temperatures, but summer is always so fun and carefree that i will be a little bit sad to see it go.

another of my favorite things about summer is the time i get to spend with jesse; during the spring and fall he is so busy with the soccer season that i feel like we barely get to see each other during the week and then weekends are filled with tournaments and games. this past weekend we got a rare full weekend together and decided to take advantage and take off for the hills (literally!) and stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast in virginia’s shenandoah valley. jesse planned everything, from where we stayed at l’auberge provencale to the scenic drive we took on sunday. i just relaxed and relished the time we got to spend together.

i think that there is something so special about when you know someone so well and are so comfortable in their company that you can simply be without conversation or activity. laying by the pool on saturday afternoon, luxuriating in our room’s claw foot bathtub (i took 3 baths in 15 hours), and driving in silence along peaceful country roads made me realize how thankful and lucky i am to have such wonderful love and companionship with jesse.  this weekend was truly a blessing and i am so happy to have shared it with someone i care about so much.

i had such a fantastic weekend spent with new and old friends. i’ve found that once you graduate from college it becomes so much harder to make new friends– you’re no longer all lumped together in one place where everyone has similar interests and is all the same age. it’s harder to make lasting connections with people when you are busy with work, family, and however else we spend our time. the past few weeks i’ve had the chance to meet and make some new friends and it is so lovely and refreshing to be spending time with new people. friday night we had a game night at our apartment and it was a great mix of people, most of whom we had met and became friends with recently. it was so fun to get to know everyone a little better through games. and what better way to show your true sense of humor than playing apples to apples and cranium!

saturday night i had a nice relaxing dinner with jesse and his grandmother at mon amie gabi. we watched the 30 best olympic moments before we went to dinner and i cried (of course)– i can’t wait for the olympics! my favorite events are definitely the gymnastics. what are yours?

sunday jesse and i went on a treasure hunt at old lucketts antique store in lucketts, virginia. i’m happy to say we found an entry table! once i get it perfectly styled i will share some pictures with you!

last but not least i got to spend some time with my sister’s family sunday evening. my little nephews are growing up so fast! over the past few months they have changed so much. giulio is now a full-fledged little boy, but i still can’t resist picking him up and smothering him with kisses (even though he thinks i’m being silly). and kiran is no longer a perfectly pudgy little baby, but a curious, giggly toddler who lights up a room with his smile. i am going to miss them so much while they’re in italy for the next few weeks!

i hope everyone had a fantastic weekend filled with friends (old and new!), family and delicious food, and that you’re ready to take on this new week!
